The FFP2 mask without valve is used to protect the user's respiratory tract from aerosols, fluids and solid particles.

Many FFP2 masks are available on the market. As it is a Personal Protective Equipment, it must be certified in order to be sure of its effectiveness and to betherefore classified as a PPE.

How to recognize whether a FFP2 mask is "safe" (tested)?

If an FFP2 mask without valve is tested, it is certified. If the FFP2 is certified the following information is printed on the PPE: the name of the manufacturer (or distributor), the model of the mask, the manufacturing standard (e.g. EN 149:2001+A1:2009), the filtering class (FFP2), the indication of use (NR or R), the CE mark and the identification of the Notified Body.

This FFP2 without valve bears all these data.

For the correct use of this PPE:

  • Before putting on the FFP2 mask, clean your hands with a hydroalcoholic hand sanitizer or soap and water.
  • Open the protective mask, insert the face towards the inside of the mask, holding the nose bar up.
  • Position the FFP2 so that it covers the nose and mouth.
  • Hook the two elastic loops behind the ears.
  • Adjust the nose clip.

To test whether the PPE is being worn correctly:

  • Place both hands on the FFP2 mask and inhale deeply. If you feel a flow of air in the nose area, adjust/tighten the nose clip again.
  • If there is airflow around the edges of the mask, reposition ear loops to achieve a better fit.

The NR marking on the FFP2 without valve indicates that this PPE is not reusable (it is disposable).

The FFP2 is therefore able to protect the user's respiratory tract for only one work shift (approximately 8 hours).

It should be replaced immediately if breathing becomes difficult due to saturation of the filter material and if it becomes wet.

The FFP2 without valve is a filtering mask capable of filtering the air coming from the external environment (unlike surgical masks which only filter the outgoing air, blocking the pathogens inside the mask), it is therefore a Category III PPE (surgical ones are not Personal Protective Equipment  but Medical Devices).

FFP2 without valve can be used in all environments where a level of respiratory protection equal to FFP2 is required in order to protect the user from aerosols, fluids and solid particles
